Project Purpose

Rice County, along with MnDOT, has identified this intersection as one that needs to be improved. It has several deficiencies along with ever-increasing pressure from increasing traffic. Several factors identified this as an area of needed improvement:

  • An atypical intersection where multiple roadways converge on a single point

  • Driver delays caused by high traffic volumes and multiple intersections

  • Higher than average crash rates

  • Increasing traffic volumes

  • Ongoing economic development in the immediate and adjacent quadrants of the interchange has and is projected to, impact the function of the east side of this interchange further negatively. This also impacts CSAH 46 and County 59

  • This location is also part of the 'I-35 Emergency Alternate Route' and as such, any Interstate closure within this area creates severe congestion and safety issues.

Traffic modeling was completed by MnDOT and preliminary and final engineering was completed by Stonebrooke Engineering.
